Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill who was born in Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England to Lord Randolph Churchill and Lady Randolph Churchill (née Jennie Jerome) was well known for his domineering presence, sharp wit, and uncompromising resilience. Elected 1900 as a Conservative; in 1904 switched to Liberal Party

Joined the Liberal Party and became the president of the Board of Trade in 1904

Served as Under Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1906-08

Served in the military in France during World War I

Secretary of War 1918-21

He rejoined the Conservative Party in 1925.

Chancellor of the Exchequer 1924-29

He was named "Man of the Half Century" by Time's Magazine in 1949

Served as First Lord of Admiralty when World War II broke out

Awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize in literature for his six volume history of World War II, he was allegedly disappointed that it wasn't the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to prevent the Cold War between the East and West from deteriorating into nuclear conflict. He was awarded the Order of the Garter in 1953, becoming Sir Winston. Both he and his Foreign Secretary Sir Anthony Eden had declined this honor in 1945, feeling it inappropriate following the landslide General Election defeat.
