Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born on 30th Nov, 1874. Let me today discuss about the Artist Side of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill

Sir Winston wrote about 20 books and various speeches and other papers. His first book was, "The Story of the Malakand Field Force," He was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Early in his writing career he was often mistaken for the American novelist whose name was also Winston Churchill. Churchill wrote to his American counterpart, and told him he was thereafter going to sign all his published works 'Winston Spencer Churchill' to avoid confusion. The two actually met in Boston in 1899 and became fast friends.

He was not only a great writer but also an amazing painter, speaker and influential person as a whole. He had published almost 600 paintings in his lifetime. Churchill spent much of his time between 1931 and 1935 at his home, Chartwell, in Kent. He was an enthusiastic amateur mason and built garden walls and a swimming pool during that period. >> Read More interesting facts of Winston Churchill

Famous Winston Churchill's quote on History

For my part, I consider that it will be found much better by all parties to leave the past to history, especially as I propose to write that history myself.

History is written by the victors.

History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.

History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days. What is the worth of all this? The only guide to a man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor.

I do not suppose that at any moment of history has the agony of the world been so great or widespread. Tonight the sun goes down on more suffering than ever before in the world.

Study history, study history. In history lies all the secrets of statecraft.

The whole history of the world is summed up in the fact that, when nations are strong, they are not always just, and when they wish to be just, they are no longer strong.

Legendary British wartime leader Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was the man of extraordinary humanity and maintained decency in all his works. He had always taken the assignments with great and clear headedness and a determination. Churchill evolved from a young army officer, who was extremely honest person, to a position of Prime Minister in his lifetime. He believed that civilization is the broad plateau and everyone has a capacity to reach it. He experienced World Wars in an out. He genuinely knew what it looked and smelled like and the horrors of it. He was also full of apprehension about the wars of the masses, and wars using mass technology. Winston Churchill's Quotes on Politician

A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen.

No part of the education of a politician is more indispensable than the fighting of elections.

I have always felt that a politician is to be judged by the animosities he excites among his opponents.

The world today is ruled by harassed politicians absorbed in getting into office or turning out the other man so that not much room is left for debating the great issues on their merits

We must beware of trying to build a society in which nobody counts for anything except a politician or an official, a society where enterprise gains no reward and thrift no privileges.

I am never going to have anything more to do with politics or politicians. When this war is over I shall confine myself entirely to writing and painting.

Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.

I was only the servant of my country and had I, at any moment, failed to express her unflinching resolve to fight and conquer, I should at once have been rightly cast aside.

If the Almighty were to rebuild the world and asked me for advice, I would have English Channels round every country. And the atmosphere would be such that anything which attempted to fly would be set on fire.

Winston Churchill's Quotes on Truth

A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.

Occasionally a man stumbles over the truth. Most dust themselves off and continue walking as though nothing had happened.

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

There are a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true.

You make all kinds of mistakes, but as long as you are generous and true and also fierce, you cannot hurt the world or even seriously distress her.

Winston Churchill's Quotes on Government

I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.

When I am abroad, I always make it a rule never to criticize or attack the government of my own country. I make up for lost time when I come home.

It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

The Government simply cannot make up their mind or they cannot get the prime minister to make up his mind. So they go on in strange paradox, decided only to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, adamant for drift, solid for fluidity, all powerful for impotency. And so we go on preparing more months more years precious perhaps vital for the greatness of Britain for the locusts to eat. - Speaking in the Address in Reply debate, after giving some specific instances of Germany's war preparedness

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. - Thomas Paine

We have the best government that money can buy. - Mark Twain

Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories. - Thomas Jefferson

The marvel of all history is the patience with which men and women submit to burdens unnecessarily laid upon them by their governments. - George Washington

Winston Churchill's Quotes on War

A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him.

Politics is almost as exciting as war, and quite as dangerous. In war you can only be killed once, but in politics many times.

In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnaminity In Peace: Goodwill.

I am never going to have anything more to do with politics or politicians. When this war is over I shall confine myself entirely to writing and painting.

You were given the choice between war and dishonour. You chose dishonour and you will have war.

One day President Roosevelt told me that he was asking publicly for suggestions about what the war should be called. I said at once 'The Unnecessary War'.

Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.

The wars of people will be more terrible than those of kings.

Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war.

War is a game that is played with a smile. If you can't smile, grin. If you can't grin, keep out of the way till you can.

War is mainly a catalogue of blunders.

War is not final, failure is not fatal, it isn the will to continue that counts.

War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. - John F. Kennedy

The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his. - George S. Patton

War does not determine who is right - only who is left. - Bertrand Russell

There was never a good war, or a bad peace. - Benjamin Franklin

Winston Churchill's Quotes on Books

If you cannot read all your books, at any rate handle, or as it were, fondle them – peer into them, let them fall open where they will, read from the first sentence that arrests the eye, set them back on the shelves with your own hands, arrange them on your own plan so that if you do not know what is in them, you at least know where they are. Let them be your friends; let them at any rate be your acquaintances. If they cannot enter the circle of your life, do not deny them at least a nod of recognition.

It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations.

Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.

Writing a long and substantial book is having a friend and companion at your side, to whom you can always turn for comfort and amusement, and whose society becomes more attractive as a new and widening field of interest is lighted in the mind.

Lesson learned from this quote

1) Do not stop un-necessary at any point. Keep walking towards your goal. Movement is important in order to achieve the goals you set for yourself.

2) Do not pay attention on the negative version people say to you. Many a times we come across the people who say, No, you won’t be able to do this or This is too difficult and it is not your cup of tea. Instead of stopping, explaining or arguing with them, Winston Churchill advises to move forward. Do not waste your energy into convincing the other party. Believe in yourself and keep moving forward.
